The Manhattans Shining Star Album: Live From South Africa Vol. 2
Genres: R&B
Performed live, this 1980 soul-pop ballad is still makes you want to snuggle up with your own shining star. |

The doo-wop-influenced harmonies are intact. The live track is less polished, but it remains undeniably hummable. 20 years after “Shining Star” first climbed the Pop and R&B charts, it continues to elicit a bright response, even at a concert on the other side of the world. Pulled out of context, lyrics like, “Honey, I’ll never leave you lonely / Give my love to you only” sound trite, even corny. But as the South African crowd claps and chimes in en masse, “Honey, you are my shining star, don’t you go away,” with isolated women in the audience screaming their heads off and getting their panties all in a bunch, it’s clear that this soulful ballad still shines.
