Back in the mid-'90s, I was driving through South Central L.A. with a mod-looking friend in the passenger seat. While stopped at a light, a twenty-something black dude in the next car started honking his horn wildly and gesturing for us to roll down our windows. "Man!" the guy yelled to my friend, "Ain't you Brand New Heavies?" My friend, who preferred to think of himself as the spitting image of a young Keith Richards, was absolutely mortified to be mistaken for one of England's latest crop of young soul rebels. And though I've laughed my ass off about it for years, I can't say I entirely blame him. For while Brand New Heavies certainly had the right look and the right influences, their music was always a little too mannered and un-funky to hold its own with the old-school wax that inspired them. This remixed version of "Saturday Nite" is a good case in point -- the song's party-time groove is indeed outstanding, but it's a blatant lift from Marvin Gaye's "Got To Give It Up" (to be fair, BNH at least gave Marvin a writer's co-credit). The vocalists try way too hard to be gritty and soulful on the verses, while the repeated chants of "Saturday Nite, Saturday Nite" sound about as white as a toothpaste commercial. Native Tongue rapper Mos Def does his best to lift the party into overdrive with some choice interjections, but ultimately the whole affair sounds best when you're not paying too much attention to it. Don't know about you, but I'd rather spin some Marvin Gaye.
