James Brown Turn It Loose (Live) Album: Turn It Loose
Genres: R&B
This live-in-the-'90s funk vamp from the Godfather of Soul will get your mojo working -- but it's just a tease that's over way too soon. |

As this early-'90s rendition of his 1969 hit "Give It Up Or Turnit A Loose" aptly illustrates, James Brown may be a total nutjob, but onstage he's still a man to be reckoned with. His shouts are frenzied and full-bodied, and you can practically see him doin' his "good foot" dance as the well-rehearsed backing band vamps away behind him. Unfortunately, as this is the show's opening number, much of the first minute is taken up by Bobby Byrd's hoarse introduction, leaving just over a minute for Brown to "Turn It Loose" before switching abruptly into the next song. It's a real tease, and then some -- just when you're getting into the groove, the track cuts off. Oh well, guess you'll just have to go pull out one of his incredible live albums (might I recommend Say it Live and Loud from Dallas in 1968?), and let the Godfather truly get your funk rocks off.

I was lucky enough to see James Brown live a few years ago, and this recording does that experience NO! justice.
