Dave Hollister You Can't Say Album: Chicago '85... The Movie
Genres: R&B
Dave uses his vocal power to make a convincing case that he tried to do his lady right -- more convincing, unfortunately, than the by-the-numbers R&B ballad behind him. |

You can count on ex-Blackstreet member Dave Hollister to pour every bit of his considerable vocal power into his work, which can make his stuff a pleasure when the material’s up to snuff. But this unexceptional soul ballad doesn’t qualify, lacking any melodic lift and making Hollister work too hard to carry the load. You can easily believe him, of course when he swears to his lady that he’s done all he can to keep their crumbling relationship together. His alternately angry and sorrowful vocal insures that you’ll buy his story -- you just won’t want to hear it a bunch of times. To be fair, this tune makes more sense as a supporting piece in Hollister’s neo-concept album Chicago ’85: The Movie than as a single, as is best heard with the other stuff around it.
