For the past decade, St. Etienne have based their career around a blend of ’60s British pop melodies and dance beats. As this track, from 1998’s Good Humor, attests, their sound has remained surprisingly relevant throughout their 13-year career. “Sylvie” shimmies along to a samba beat, as cushy synths build the song’s near-disco melody into a swirling climax. Vocalist Sarah Cracknell, long the focus of the band’s songs, echoes the dancing melody with her girlish voice, as she sings of defending her lover from another woman’s advances. Anyone hungering for a delicious piece of pop candy needs look no further than “Sylvie.”
