Ella Fitzgerald Tain't What You Do Album: Legends: Jazz Greats
Genres: Jazz,Pop
Ella’s pretty stellah on this ‘30s pop jam from the vaults. Still just a kid, her pipes were nearly ripe, and she shows she knows how to swing! |

This track dates back to the dawn of Ella’s career, when she was singing with Chick Webb’s orchestra and hadn’t yet developed the jazzy scat style that would become her trademark. In those days, she was more a pop singer and balladeer with an exceptionally pure voice, and you can hear that on “Tain't What You Do.” But with Webb & Co. pushing her with some pumping charts, Ella could still swing – while managing to carefully enunciate every word -- and she even gives a hint of the scatting to come with an inventive little vocal riff at the end of the tune. She’d go on to much bigger and better things later, but this song, a popular one in its day, gives clear signs that she was headed in the direction of greatness.
