Jay-Z
The head of the growing Roc-A-Fella stable, Jay-Z has become one of the titans of hip-hop, and has helped lead an East Coast resurgence. He grew up as Shawn Carter in the rough Marcy housing project in Brooklyn; his early-blooming skill for the rap game resulted in his being signed by Priority Records, after shortening his neighborhood nickname from “Jazzy” to “Jay-Z.” His 1996 debut, Reasonable Doubt, sold well and contained the anthem “Ain’t No Nigga” with Foxy Brown. But Jay-Z had bigger plans, starting his own Roc-A-Fella label and signing a distribution deal with Def Jam. It paid off when his 1997 sophomore set, Vol. 1: In My Lifetime quickly went platinum; Vol. 2: Hard Knock Life blew up the following year, thanks to the Annie-sampling title track and another monster single, “Can I Get A…” Following the P example of providing a constant flow of product, Jaz-Z then unleashed a series of protégés on the public, like Beanie Sigel, Memphis Bleek, and the most successful, Ja Rule, before dropping his own new album, Vol. 3: the Life and Times of S. Carter, in 1999. Fans didn’t have to wait long for more: Jay-Z was back in late 2000 with The Dynasty: Roc La Familia, though it was more a label sampler than a new Jay-Z album. |
