Greyboy Allstars
Some bands are so incredible they just break your heart, and some incredible bands break your heart by breaking up -- such is the sad case of the Greyboy Allstars. a funk outfit so truly deserving of the “Allstars” tag. In 1993, saxman Karl Denson hooked up with drummer Zak Najor to form the Greyboy Allstars -- a kind of house band for Denson's Greyboy Records, a label he started with DJ Greyboy. The two rounded out the lineup of stellar musicians with Robert Walter on keys, Eldgin Parks on guitar, and Chris Stillwell on bass. Combining jazz, funk, boogaloo and an original West Coast groove, the Allstars went on to release several albums including West Coast Boogaloo in 1994, and A Town Called Earth and Live, both in 1997. Much to the chagrin of the funk and jazz fans who formed a strong grassroots fanbase, the Allstars eventually called it quits, splitting off into "sidecar" projects Karl Denson's Tiny Universe and Robert Walter's 20th Congress. |
