Buckwheat Zydeco
One of the most popular figures in contemporary zydeco music, Buckwheat Zydeco (real name: Stanley Dural) sang "Jambalaya" at the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta, brought the house down at both Clinton inaugurals, and has been nominated for four Grammy Awards. The secret of his success lies in his ability to combine the classic bayou sounds of Clifton Chenier with a more contemporary feel. A Louisiana-born piano prodigy, young Stanley began performing professionally when he was still in elementary school. After backing Joe Tex and Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown, and leading a funk combo called Buckwheat & The Hitchhikers, he was finally bitten by the zydeco bug in 1976 while playing organ in Clifton Chenier's band. By 1979, he had switched to accordion and was fronting a new zydeco combo, the Ils Sont Partis Band. In 1986, Buckwheat inked a deal with Island Records, becoming the first zydeco act to record for a major label. |
