Since she and her band 'Til Tuesday achieved critical mass with their 1985 hit "Voices Carry," the wry singer/songwriter has fought to be heard. When she broke up the band in order to pursue a solo career, the singer/songwriter released her first album, Whatever, in 1993. Troubles with her label, Imago, stalled the release of her follow-up, I'm With Stupid, until 1996. Though both albums were well-received by critics, neither sold particularly well. Seems that Mann's collaborators -- Elvis Costello and Jules Shear –- just couldn't help her come up with anything good enough. The situation finally changed in early 2000, when Mann was thrust into the limelight with her soundtrack to the Oscar-nominated film Magnolia. ("Save Me," from the soundtrack, was also nominated for an Oscar of its own.)
