Welcome !
    Smashing Pumpkins
At the core of the Smashing Pumpkins is singer-songwriter Billy Corgan, who was a refugee from a couple of failed goth bands when he met guitarist James Iha in the late ‘80s. The two first played live in 1988 (with the backing of a drum machine), at a Polish bar in their hometown, Chicago. Soon after that show, Corgan got into a musical argument outside of a local nightclub with a woman named D’Arcy Wretzky; a few days later she dropped her last name and became the Pumpkins’ bass player. When the trio landed its fourth gig -- opening for Jane’s Addiction -- Corgan replaced the drum machine with Jimmy Chamberlin. Corgan continued to write all of the band’s songs, which were sold on cassette at its shows. In 1990, the Pumpkins released a single on Seattle’s Sub Pop Records, home to a burgeoning band called Nirvana, and then signed with Caroline Records that December. The Pumpkins recorded their debut album, Gish, with Butch Vig, who went on to produce Nirvana’s breakthrough, Nevermind. Riding the intial underground wave of grunge-mania, Gish combined classic-rock bombast with fuzzy psychedelic feedback and anguished lyrics. The quartet’s heavy sound and Corgan’s guitar pyrotechnics created a college-radio smash in 1991. After exhaustive touring, the Pumpkins were already on their way to arena-level stardom when Virgin Records offered them a contract. Two multi-platinum albums, Siamese Dream (1993) and Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness (1996), followed. From there on, the group became increasingly fragmented, as Iha and D’Arcy formed their own record label, Scratchie, and Corgan began recording solo material and collaborating with other bands. There were also darker issues at play; Chamberlin and tour keyboard player Jonathan Melvoin OD’ed during the Mellon Collie tour, leading to Melvoin’s death -- Chamberlin was kicked out of the band soon after to deal with his addiction. Several different drummers contributed to the recording of the band’s fourth studio effort, Adore (1998), which was both a critical and commercial disappointment. The year 2000 saw the return of Jimmy Chamberlin to the drumseat on Machina: Machines of God -- and the exit of D’Arcy, who was replaced by Hole bass player Melissa Auf Der Maur. In interviews throughout the first half of the year, Corgan insisted that Machina was the final Pumpkins album, and that its summer 2000 tour would likely be its last.
