After the New Jersey-based Misfits broke up in 1983, Danzig formed the more metallic Samhain before going solo in 1987. Joined by guitarist John Christ, bassist Eerie Von on bass, and ex-Circle Jerks/Black Flag drummer Chuck Biscuits, Danzig used his fiendish-sounding vocals to explore the line between cartoon HM and genuinely Satanic music, as the band released a series of albums on fan Rick Rubin's Def Jam label. A live video of an old tune, "Mother," became a huge MTV hit in 1993, but 1994's more mellow Danzig 4 was a flop, and Danzig debuted a whole new lineup for 1996's Danzig 5:Blackacidevil.
