Lynyrd Skynyrd
Perhaps the quintessential Southern rock band of all time, Lynyrd Skynyrd has been hard rock staple for nearly 30 years. Formed in Jacksonville, Florida, in the late '60s, the group spent years honing their material in rehearsals and clubs before landing a deal with MCA records in 1972. Lead vocalist Ronnie Van Zandt's charisma and populist lyrics -- and the group's infamous three guitar attack -- made Lynyrd Skynyrd an immediate concert favorite, known as much for their rough 'n tumble lifestyle as their music. The 1977 plane crash that killed Van Zandt and guitarist Steve Gaines effectively ended the group until 1987, when most of the surviving members (with Johnnie Van Zandt filling in for big brother Ronnie on vocals) hit the touring trail again. To everyone's surprise, Skynyrd Redux became (and remains) a top-drawing concert attraction. Their latest studio album, Edge of Forever may not rank as a classic, but it's a fine, hard rockin' return to rebel form. |

Southern Rock's all-time anthem gets a rote "lyve" run-through from a reconstituted Skynyrd. Turn it up -- or off, as the case may be.
