Mos Def
Hip-hop renaissance man Mos Def (born Dante Beze in Brooklyn) is an actor, bookstore owner, and poet, who got his start rapping as a wee lad of nine. He developed his style to the point that the Native Tongues posse -- home of De La Soul and A Tribe Called Quest, among others -- invited him to join up. A guest stint on De La Soul's Stakes is High and a couple of on-point singles (the second featuring guest MC Q-Tip) paved the way for his solo career. With his Rawkus Records labelmate Talib Kweli, he finally released a long-player under the name Black Star that was one of 1998's strongest offerings. Remaining ahead of the gangsta and pop rap predominating on the charts, Mos Def came out with an acclaimed solo effort, Black On Both Sides, a year later. |
