Joe Henry
A critic's darling best known for two albums -- 1992's Short Man's Room and 1993's Kindness of the World -- recorded with alt-country kingpins the Jayhawks, singer/songwriter Joe Henry actually draws upon a wide spectrum of musical styles for his witty and acerbic songs. Born in North Carolina and raised in the Midwest, young Joe internalized everything from country music to soul and funk. He recorded his first album, Talk of Heaven in 1985, but didn't pop up on the critical radar until Murder of Crows was released in 1989. Since then, it seems like every one of his records (including 1999's Fuse) has made the year-end Top Ten lists, though his impressive critical standing has yet to translate into major record sales. |
