U2
If ever there's ever been a band that should've quit while it was still ahead, it was U2. Like Led Zeppelin, whose power-trio-plus-charismatic-singer prototype they essentially updated (and whose place in the classic-rock pantheon they effectively inherited), U2 peaked artistically around their fourth album, then began a long, meandering slide into pretention and self-parody. But while John Bonham's accidental death at least gave Led Zep an obvious "time's up" sign, U2 -- like REM, another great band from the '80s that now has absolutely nothing to say -- has spent the last decade trying to convince the world (and themselves) that they still have something relevant to add to contemporary music. Unfortunately, with each new release by the Irish quartet, it becomes a little harder to remember how thrilling early records like 1980's Boy and 1983's War actually were. |
