Freestylers
This 10-man U.K. collective blends real instruments, loads of samples and even breakdancers to put across its brand of "really instant music" suitable for the dance floor. Old-school hip hop lovers Aston Harvey and Andrew Galea (who first recorded together as Sol Brothers) formed the group in 1992. The pair soon joined forces with Matt Cantor, who, like them, had been a force on the early-‘90s British dance scene. The Freestylers made a splash at home with their debut single "Drop the Boom," which was retitled "AK48" and became a huge breakbeat favorite stateside. In 1998, "B-Boy Stance" earned the band a slot on "Top of the Pops," and a series of live performances throughout Europe also won praise. The Freestylers have collaborated with longtime idols like Afrika Bambatta and The Jungle Brothers. We Rock Hard, the band's first album, was released in the U.S. by Mammoth Records in May 1999.
