Zeke
A homegrown response to the ‘90s media hype about a “Seattle sound,” Zeke formed in 1993, and soon was roaring with volcanic intensity throughout the Puget Sound. After assorted singles on tiny punk labels, the quartet of singer/guitarist Blind Marky Felchtone, drummer Donny Paycheck, guitarist Abe Zanuel Riggs III, and a short-lived bass player released the 1996 debut, Super Sound Racing, on Seattle’s Scooch Pooch label. Like the checker-striped dragster on the cover, the band valued speed above all. In the ensuing year, its simple song structures and take-no-prisoners live shows built upon its already sizable underground following. Pennywise frontman Fletcher brought Zeke to the attention of hallowed punk label Epitaph, resulting in the 1998 album Kicked In The Teeth. Recorded with Seattle production whiz Jack Endino, it barrelled down the strip with 17 thrashing, trashy numbers. Zeke continued its coverage of traditional punk-rock subject matter on the follow-up, Dirty Sanchez, produced by Fastbacks guitarist Kurt Bloch and featuring a spoken-word segment from Ted Nugent. |
