Medeski Martin & Wood
Revered in both the Jazz and Jamband scenes, Medeski Martin and Wood have cleared their own unique path since forming in 1992. Based in New York, MMW imbues their sound with an edge most certainly derived from the energy of the street. Urgent funk, free-form jazz, exploratory groove -- all of these are part of MMW’s sound. Comprised of Hammond whiz John Medeski, bassist Chris Wood and drummer/percussionist Billy Martin, MMW debuted with Notes From the Underground in 1992. Popularity boosted by steady gigging in the Northeast, the group signed to Gramavision in ’93 and released their sophomore effort, It’s A Jungle In Here. Continuing and expanding their tour schedule, the band took a break for a few days in 1994 to record the acoustic Friday Afternoon In the Universe, which, in 1996, was followed by Shackman, which captured the MMW sound at an organically energetic high. Adding DJ Logic to the mix for Combustication, MMW broadened their sound, incorporating a taste of hip-hop in the mix. The increasingly explorative -- and some might argue self-indulgent -- releases Farmer’s Reserve (an unstructured foray into improvisational avant-jazz recorded in their secluded Hawaii getaway known as “The Shack”) and the acoustic live recording Tonic were released in 1999 and 2000 respectively. Currently signed to the quintessential jazz label Blue Note, 2000 found the band returning to their funkier roots on The Dropper. |
