Robert Walter's 20th Congress
If you're lookin' for some fine jazz/funk anchored by a fat Hammond sound, look no further than Robert Walter's 20th Congress. Born as a "side-car project" from the ashes of his former band The Greyboy Allstars who disbanded in the late '90s, the 20th Congress has evolved into one of the tightest groove outfits on the scene. Keyboardist Robert Walter is joined by saxophonist/flautist Cocheme Gastelum, drummer George Sluppick, bassist Chris Stillwell (who was also in Greyboy Allstars), and percussionist Chuck Prada. Wearing their influences on their sleeve -- everyone from Grant Green to Herbie Hancock -- the band is known for laying down tight grooves that keep the audiences at their many shows dancing all night long. In 1996 Robert released a solo album, Spirit of '70, featuring saxophone legend Gary Bartz. The 20th Congress followed up in '99 with an EP, Health and Fitness and in July, 2000 released a full length album on Fog City Records, Money Shot, featuring a guest appearance by Galactic drummer Stanton Moore. |
