Green Day
An infamous documentary dubbed 1991 as The Year Punk Broke, thanks to the emergence of Nirvana, but arguably, that was a few years early. While there was a punk rock aggression in Nirvana's opening salvo, the first real punk band to break wide in the U.S. was Green Day, with 1994's landmark Dookie. While not a wholly original or innovative record, Dookie made the pop-informed punk sound pioneered by bands like the Buzzcocks and the Descendents palatable to hordes of teenagers, thanks in no small part to heavy MTV-rotation, and appearances on the Lollapalooza Tour and the Woodstock '96 Festival. Dookie eventually sold over ten million copies in the U.S. alone, and won a Grammy award for Best Alternative Music Performance.
No small feat for the trio of Billie Joe (nee Armstrong, guitar/vocals), Mike Dirnt (nee Pritchard, bass), and Tré Cool (born Frank Edwin Wright III, drums). Just five years earlier, Billie Joe and Mike had formed Green Day from the remnants of their high school band, Sweet Children. Coming from the fertile Berkeley, CA Gilman Street scene (which also spawned such influential bands as Operation Ivy and Jawbreaker), the band self-released an EP, 1,000 Hours, before signing to the up and coming local indie label, Lookout! Records, and releasing their first full-length, 39/Smooth. Shortly thereafter, Tré joined, and by 1992's Kerplunk, Green Day was a major indie success, leading to the major label interest that resulted in Dookie. While later albums haven't duplicated Dookie's commercial success, the follow-ups Insomniac (1995) and Nimrod (1997) have both sold well over two million copies each, and the band has had continued success on modern rock radio with singles like "J.A.R." and "Good Riddance." The band recently headlined the 2000 edition of the Vans Warped Tour, and has a new album, Warning, set for an October 2000 release. |
