Talib Kweli & Hi-Tek
With the freedom of movement of an old school jazz player, talented MC Talib Kweli bounces back and forth between solo projects and work with rapper Mos Def (Black Star) and DJ Hi-Tek (Reflection Eternal). Talib Kweli Greene was born in Brooklyn, and attended New York University. In ’94, he visited Cincinnati, where he hooked up with DJ Hi-Tek. The two forged a long-distance partnership, dubbing themselves Reflection Eternal. In ’95, Talib met Mos Def, and the two began working together under the name Black Star. Black Star released its self-titled debut disc in 1998, while Reflection Eternal released its debut, Train Of Thought in October of 2000. Both albums are characterized by smart, positive, Black activist-inspired lyrics and innovative beats, helping to carve out a rep for Talib as one of the hottest up-and-comers in the conscious rap game. |
