Regular Fries
The band known as Regular Fries first made themselves known to the world via a ten point manifesto they faxed out to magazines in the UK. It was a bold move, considering the band only had two songs when they played their first gig, and only had one video to show for it, but it seemed to work - the combination of the manifesto, the video, and a split single with Campag Velocet (1997's “Dust It Don't Bust It”) led to a record company bidding war that ended when the octet (made up of lead vocalist Dave Brothwell, vocalist/percussionist Rich Little, keyboardist Paul Moody, keyboardist Will Beaven, guitarist Griff, bassist Pat O' Sullivan, and sonics/vocalist Andy Starke) signed to JBO in May of 1998. Two 1998 EPs, Free the Regular Fries and Fries Entertainment, and a tour supporting the Lo Fidelity Allstars helped build the band's fan base, and by January 1999, they were ready to begin work on their debut full-length, Accept The Signal, which drew rave reviews on its release the following June. A stint on the European festival circuit and their own headlining tour followed, as the band earned the admiration of such like-minded individuals as Mercury Rev, Ian Brown, Manic Street Preachers, and Kool Keith, all of whom would go on to work with the band in some respect.
Deciding they could only follow their success with "the first great psychedelic album of the 21st century," the band set to work on their follow-up, War On Plastic Pants, in September of 1999, with three different producers. The first set of tunes was recorded in the UK by noted American psychedelia producer, Dave Fridmann (responsible for the Flaming Lips' The Soft Bulletin and Mercury Rev's Deserter's Songs, among others), and mixed in Fridmann's upstate New York studios. The next set was recorded in London with Primal Scream producer Jagz Kooner, while the third set was helmed by Chemical Brothers engineer Steve Dub. War On Plastic Pants is set for release in 2001, and a single, "Eclipse," is available for download exclusively at MUSICBLITZ. |
