	Poetry and hip-hop have been trying to meet in the middle since rappers first picked up the mic, and there have been concerted efforts made at a hookup during the last several years -- especially in Philly, home of the rather poetic Roots. Jill Scott’s their protégé, and she does ‘em proud on this tale of good love gone bad. It’s a simple theme, but Scott handles it gracefully over lighter-than-air jazz chords and a slammin’ beat. Whether it’s the serious details (describing the weather the day she and her man met) or the funny description of how hard she fell (it takes chops to describe yourself as “Loose like bowels / After collard greens”), her verse is deep enough to make you think and clear enough to be understood, a rare double feature. It might not be Shakespeare, but then no one’s lining up to remix him, either.
