If you had to sum up surf music in only two minutes and thirteen seconds, you could do a helluva lot worse than to pop Dick Dale's incredible rendition of "Misirlou" on the stereo. From the driving drums to the reverb-drenched, double-picked guitar, this is vintage surf music at its absolute finest. The song's exotic, Middle Eastern-tinged melody perfectly lends itself to Dale's frenetic arrangement; the roar of guitars and saxophones echoes the awesome rush of the surf, while the bright piano arpeggios conjure up images of the sunlight reflecting upon the water. In Dale's meaty hands, "Misirlou" became a surf standard, though no other surf act has ever been able to match the power and majesty of his 1962 version.

I just never really got how the Beach boys got pegged as a surf band after guys like Dick Dale and Link Ray started playing.... This song is a timeless classic. I hope my great children rock out to this song too!
