John Hiatt Before I Go Album: Crossing Muddy Waters
Genres: Alt-Country,Rock
A touching acoustic pledge of devotion from the eternal critic's darling. The lyrics are pretty hackneyed, but the sweet dobro picking more than makes up for 'em! |

In the interest of full disclosure, I might as well admit that I was looking forward to listening to this track about as much as my next prostate exam. To me, John Hiatt has always been the sort of overrated singer-songwriter who could shit in a bucket and still get "four stars" from every middle-aged white guy rock critic in America. That said, "Before I Go" is kind of a nice surprise -- here, Hiatt thankfully abandons the heavy-handed bar-band rock of his acclaimed Bring The Family period in favor of an intimate acoustic setting, which makes perfect sense for this heartfelt pledge of eternal devotion. Hiatt's lyrics about hawks and canyons are corny in the extreme, and he can't seem to decide whether to steal the melody from Neil Young's "Harvest" or Neil Young's "Long May You Run," but the emotions are real and the dobro picking is sublime. If you love John Hiatt, you're certain to cream all over this one, but even longtime Hiatt-haters might find themselves singing along (I know I did!).
