Lynyrd Skynyrd Saturday Night Special Album: Nothin' Fancy
Genres: Rock
A rip-roaring “lyve” take on the Skynyrd classic that packs as much punch as its namesake. Southern rock doesn’t get much better than this! |

Let’s face it -- with only keyboardist Billy Powell, bassist Leon Wilkeson, and uber-picker Gary Rossington as its only remaining original members, Lynyrd Skynyrd 2000 is more a superstar cover band than the Kings of Southern Rock they were in the ‘70s. Still, with the aid of some crack players and Johnny Van Zandt helming the mic (in eerily similar style to his late brother, Ronnie), the group still manages to get it up live -- as well as kick out some underrated new material of their own. This run-through of one of the band’s classics, culled from the 1997 live set, Lyve From Steeltown, packs plenty of punch, with nasty leads by Ricky Medlocke, the crunchy rhythms of Rossington, and Johnny Van Zandt’s faithful vocal recreation (and crowd-pleasing shout-out to his late brother). Even if this version of the Skynyrd band is as much in the business of paying homage to its departed comrades as they are of making new music -- they still score solid marks on both counts.

For most of the '90s, Jay Sosnicki was the editor and publisher of the seminal underground zine Nuthing Sacred. These days -- in between explosive bursts of web production -- he continues to reinvent rock ‘n roll with his band, Mojo Rib.
