He was a hot property for a while in Jamaica during the late ‘70s, and his biggest hit captures the irresistible brashness that made Dillinger a star. An ode to far-off places -- the glitzy discos of the Big Apple -- as much as the white stuff, “Cocaine In My Brain” still just sounds big, especially when compared to much of the spare dancehall that’s followed. It’s got a backing track that grooves on equal parts reggae and R&B, and Dillinger matches its energy blow-for-blow -- no pun intended -- sounding appropriately cranked to be chatting and singing about nose candy. But beneath the largeness is the thing that gives the tune a certain poignancy and makes it more than just a party anthem: it’s all based on the dreams of a kid wanting to be where the real action is. In that sense, it’s part of a long tradition of songs from many musical styles about getting away to where the grass is greener … or in this case, whiter.
