No Kenny G fans allowed for this sax-and-clarinet freakout from the Windy City’s avant-jazz darlings! |

The question for players inclined to have a good unfettered blowing session is always, “How do I keep ‘em listening after the third or fourth honk?” The Vandermark 5 -- specifically, leader Ken Vandermark on clarinet and Dave Rempis on saxophone -- smartly do it the time-honored way, by anchoring their sound and fury to a frisky but under-control rhythm section, giving the chewy, amelodic motifs a solid base. That said, it’ll take you a few passes to digest some of the interplay between the horns, but there’s some interesting dialogue happening here, from the fractured sax/clarinet call-and-response that opens the tune to the continued trading of jabs throughout. Unlikely to convert many to the avant gospel, “The Cooler” could still reward those with patient ears.
