What's this? A funky drum loop and ambient bass flourishes? Toto, we're not in Master of Reality anymore! Hey, if Tony Iommi wants to get modern on us, that's his prerogative; over his 30 year career, he's certainly given us more shuddering old-school metal riffs than you could shake a headless cross at. The problem is that "Goodbye Lament" could have really used an arranger; there are some nice riffs and segments here, but it sounds like Tony got a little lost once he decided to leave the Sabbath riff-verse--chorus-solo-riff-verse-chorus template behind. The other problem here is the vocals: Dave Grohl is a fine rock singer, but he's completely incapable of giving the song's lyrics even a trace of the menace they require. When Ozzy or even Dio sang a Sabbath tune, you believed in what they were laying down -- or at least you believed that they believed. Here, you just get the sense that Grohl is really psyched to be cutting a track with one of his idols. That's all well and good, of course, but it doesn't exactly make for a gripping listening experience. Next time, Tony, call Mark Lanegan or Dave Wyndorf -- they may not have Mr. Grohl's marquee value, but they'll definitely deliver the goods!

The song is a thought-provoking effort that challenges the music listener to listen. The guitar sound is great but the vocals are not moving. Overall, Iommi gets two stars.
