Billie’ll chill ya on this heartbreaking tale of love lost. Those tunes were her speciality, and this is one of her greatest.

“I Cover the Waterfront” is a tune that Billie Holiday recorded several times during her career, and no wonder. Its ache for a lost love, and the knowing futility of its lyric, maybe had some parallels to Holiday’s own struggles to find Mr. Right. If she didn’t live these words, you’d never know it, however: it became one of her personal standards, and there are lots of great takes to choose from. This later recording dives even deeper into the melancholy, with brooding piano chords and Holiday’s more mature vocal giving it a palpable weight and almost existential despair that sweeter versions lack. When she sings “My heart has an ache / It’s as heavy as a stone” this time, you know nothing is gonna “make it light.” That made it the ideal choice for the soundtrack to the equally glum Seven, but in any context, it’s a spellbinding performance and a towering achievement.

Billy Holiday knew hot to sing the blues with passion and emotion that are uncommon even for most of jazz singers. And this song she shws it very well. something that Ella wouldn't make, and Sarah can't even phantom

What do you expect from a woman who is the most brilliant blues singer to come through our ears. Such an amazing ability to make you sad. she suffered and it is so appearent in her music. God Bless this woman.
