With “Tyler’s Song,” Coal Chamber ushers in what on paper sounds like the worst of all possible sub-genres -- poppy death metal. In execution, however, it works surprisingly well. Way fucking heavy riffage courtesy of axe-grinder Meegs builds up the verses, while singer B. Dez Fafara works in tandem doing his best Grim Reaper impersonation. Upon reaching the chorus, the satanic Dez quickly and unexpectedly transitions himself into an altar boy on the slick, synth-drenched refrain. When he intones, “Raise your God again,” it’s an entertaining juxtaposition. Gothic, gloomy and damn catchy, “Tyler’s Song” is modern metal for the masses.
