David Was' MUSICBLITZ Exclusive, "Chow Mein Street," is a tasty yet unusual dish that's unlike anything you've ever heard. At times recalling Soul Coughing or early Beck, Was never sounds enough like either to evoke an outright comparison. A slow hip-hop beat backs up vaguely Asian sounds and other sparse instrumentation, as Was laconically speaks/raps about the unusual events that take place on a mythical Chow Mein Street, where "Plutonium's three for a quarter, no one can point you to the border," and "the beggars wear mink, and the sewers don't stink." The absurdist lyrics match the funky atmosphere of the song, and the psychedelic guitar solos that loop in and out are like duck sauce on a good Chinese dinner. This is one order of Chow Mein that will stick with you for a while!
