Though Waylon Jennings’ greatest successes came in the mid-‘70s, the original Outlaw was already a seasoned Nashville vet by 1969, with some 13 albums under his belt. Most of those albums were lame attempts to make Jennings’ unique voice and decidedly eclectic taste in songs fit a more “pop-country” mold, an experiment that never quite worked. This solid recording from Waylon’s eponymous 1969 album is a perfect snapshot of an artist in transition -- the track (a textbook honkytonk lament) deftly balances the old school country sound on which Waymore was weaned (echoey production, Jordanaires-style backing vox), and the newer, more “rock” oriented country sound that he would do much to create. Yes, the forgettable lyrics make us pine away for Waylon’s later collaborations with barroom bard Billy Joe Shaver, but there’s enough of this country giant’s emerging growl present to give this b-level track a bit of Outlaw bite.
