Robbie Williams Rock DJ Album: Sing While You're Winning
Genres: Pop
An amalgam of every '80s British pop hit you can think of, there's not a lot of rock -- or originality -- here, but it’s still pretty catchy. |

"Rock DJ" is several different blasts from the past rolled into one. Right out of the gate, a thumping bass-line swiped straight from Frankie Goes to Hollywood's "Relax" hits your ears. Then Williams' pseudo-rap delivery reminds the listener of nothing more than Murray Head's one hit, "One Night in Bangkok," with snippets of "Can I Kick It?" and a little kid joining in to remind you of Men Without Hats' "Pop Goes the World." When Williams starts singing, it's pure George Michael territory. Then the strings come in on the chorus, and it's suddenly a Stock/Aitken/Waterman dance tune (think Rick Astley or some of Bananarama and Dead or Alive's latter-day hits). To make a long story short, there's not a whole lot of originality here. However, the song is very catchy, with an extremely hooky chorus, and the nostalgia factor works for the song, never against it. It's a harmless bit of fluff that won't change the world, but still has more substance and holds more interest than most of what passes for pop music on the radio these days.
