Kweli gets butts off the wall and hands waving in the air while simultaneously challenging fake-ass MCs. In his piercing tenor, he demands that his audience move something. “Whether you’re a bourgie broad who’s acting stuck up / Or an ig’nant muthafucka shooting up the club / We gonna’ make you feel this / Break y’all spirit if y’all fake that realness,” he asserts. In addition to hyping the crowd, he calls out folks who talk a lot of shit but don’t do shit (“I call these cats Reynolds ‘cuz they plastic”). The refreshing metaphors and complex rhyme patterns once again prove Kweli to be an antidote to hip-hop’s typical gangsta-minded formula, as well as one of the most forceful up-and-comers in the rap game. Meanwhile, the odd kettle drum beats on Hi-Tek’s thumping track are a bit jarring, even distracting, but they grow on you. The offbeat flourish suggests a producer who isn’t afraid to take some chances.
