The name may be different, but there's no mistaking the sound -- two seconds into J Mascis + the Fog's "Where'd You Go" and you know beyond any doubt that this is the same guy that was behind the groundbreaking Dinosaur Jr. It's not just the similarity in title between the song and one of Dinosaur Jr.'s greatest albums, Where You Been. It's that searing, psychedelic, feedback-drenched guitar shredding, and Mascis' distinctive vocals, like a cross between Neil Young and Frank Black. Under the massive wall of guitars, "Where'd You Go" is actually pretty simple, with a pretty melody that will keep running through your head. Mascis' world-weary voice is perfect for lyrics like "Where's the day/Where's tomorrow been/Where's the peace I crave/Where's the life I'm in," as he sings on the song's chorus. Easily up there with any of Dinosaur Jr.'s classics, "Where'd You Go" is sure to please Mascis' many admirers, and is highly essential listening for any fan of indie or alternative rock -- after all, this is one of the guys that started it all, in top form!
