On his two Soul Assassins compilations -- on which all-star rappers spit over dark and dusty Muggs tracks -- the Cypress Hill beatsmith alternates between catering to, and challenging the various MCs he’s enlisted. Sometimes he adapts to their sound and gives them the kind of tracks they’ve grown accustomed to; sometimes he throws curve balls and pushes them in new directions. On this collab with the GZA, found on Soul Assassins II, Muggs takes the more expected path, giving the Wu-Tanger the kind of joint you might hear on one of his albums. Classical bow-work and tremulous, operatic background vocals lend a ghostly vibe, while GZA’s sure and steady verbalistics cut through the moody, symphonic sweeps like a rapier slicing into a misty eve. Here, GZA truly lives up to his rep as the Liquid Swordsman.
