This was one of the tunes that then-Uhuru singer Michael Rose brought with him when he took over as the group’s lead vocalist in the late ‘70s. Pretty easy to see why he did -- it became the group’s breakthrough hit, and stands today as a certified reggae classic. One of the reasons, of course, is Rose’s unforgettable chorus -- simple, melodic and charged with a subtle threat. Rastaman “Natty Dread” is who’s coming to dinner; what’ll happen? The other reasons are the embellishments -- the rock-solid Uhuru harmonies and note-perfect production by Sly and Robbie. Between that magnificently gliding bassline, sleek and deadly as a shark, and a collection of dubwise bleeps and whooshes that were never better deployed, this cut stands as one of their finest-ever studio jobs, and given the Riddim Twins’ track record, that’s saying something. But then, so is this song, as fresh as ever two decades after its release. Essential. (Do yourself an extra favor and seek out the dub version on “Time Warp Dub Clash,” released on Island Records a few years back; it ups the ante with an incessantly chiming doorbell and is an equally necessary companion piece.)
