An influential early hit from one of Kingston’s roughest DJs, for a couple of reasons. The title -- or the “Mercy” part of it, anyway -- became Bounty Killer’s favorite catchphrase, repeated on several subsequent singles. And his opening exclamation of “No Mercy” was swiped by the junglists, finding its way into more than one ragga jungle track (in fact, the nervous bass and drums of “No Mercy” seem at times to anticipate the speeded-up beats of jungle). But while those are interesting sidelights, the real reason to get this track is because it’s a perfect encapsulation of Bounty Killer’s strengths -- particularly his raw rasp, which sometimes slides into a disconcertingly melodic singsong, and his tougher-than-you persona, underlined by the gunshots that add weight to the snare cracks. Few would-be hardguy DJs talked the talk better than B.K., and this track shows why.
