It wouldn't be inappropriate to call Pete Droge's MUSICBLITZ Exclusive "alt-blues." "I Can't Help From Crying Sometime" has a bluesy basic structure, with a dark bass riff forming the song's backbone. The lyrical content also evokes basic blues themes, with Droge and Elaine Summers trading off on lines like "Mother, she's dead and gone / And I, I'm left alone," and a haunting, steady refrain of the titular lyrics. Droge turns the blues vibe on its ear, though, layering on Eastern percussion, crackling acoustic guitar, and organ. The mix of styles gives the song an atmospheric, almost shoegazer feel. Imagine Dead Can Dance collaborating with B.B. King, with a less nasal Stan Ridgway trading off vocals with Joan Osbourne, and you've a hint of what to expect. Striking and unique, this track will make you feel for Droge, but you'll also hope he doesn't cheer up too soon – feeling bad never sounded so good!
