Cowboy Junkies A Few Simple Words Album: Waltz Across America
Genres: Alt-Country
Snare drums a-snapping, ivories a-tickling … It may not be the Junkies’ defining moment, but “A Few Simple Words” warrants of repeated spins! |

This may not be the Junkies defining moment, but it is damn engaging. Recorded live during the 1999-2000 Waltz Across America Tour, “A Few Simple Words” is steeped in love and the integral role honesty plays in any relationship, be it mother to daughter or man to woman. Expert ivory tickling from Linford Detweiler propels the song’s country rock vibe, which also receives augmentation from Peter Timmins’ snapping snare and, of course, Margo Timmins’ emotive, distinct voice. She tells her lover at one point, “Honey, you’re a bastard of great proportions” but soon fesses “I will always believe in you,” -- touching on anger, laughter, love and belonging all in the course of a four minute pop song.
