George Benson All Blues Album: Live (The Early Years) Vol. 1
Genres: Jazz
Benson gets blue on Miles’ modal masterpiece. No singin’ and no funk, just liquid guitar runs that also pack some punch. |

Done a long time before he went Hollywood, this languid, faithful take on the Miles Davis standard from Kind of Blue puts Benson’s quicksilver licks in a straight jazz context. It may be a revelation for those used to hearing their Benson with a backbeat, as he and his ‘60s small group delve deep into the moody heart of Miles’ modal musings. But there’s one similarity to his later output, and that’s Benson’s sense of taste and restraint. He crafts exquisite phrases, perfectly rounding off each note and placing his gently bopping runs just so, yet he’s also conscious of the space that was such a key to Miles’ success, and never overpowers the accompaniment. Listening may make you sorry that Benson has revisited this style so infrequently over the past couple of decades, but the presence of this early material lessens any regret.
