Harder + faster = better on this pumping bop workout from ’81. If you remember Hub as just a mellow fusioneer, hear how wrong you were.

Despite his fusion rep, Hubbard doesn’t waste any time getting down to bop’s brass tacks on this Parker-Gillespie classic. The leadoff track from an album documenting a 1981 gig finds Hubbard and his sextet raring to rip into the pulsing meat of the tune, with alto saxman Richie Cole playing an effective Bird to Hubbard’s Dizzy. The performances are excellent, but Hub’s the real story: anyone who thought he’d gone soft after a decade or so of pop and R&B influenced tunes was probably silenced the first time he went on one of the several blistering runs featured here. He even goes screeching into the upper register with apparent ease, a youthful move which might remind you that after Miles, Hubbard was many jazz fans’ trumpeter of choice in the ‘60s. In case you didn’t remember, here’s some conclusive evidence of why that was so.
