Genres: Reggae
If you can back it up, you can “Jack It Up” -- and Spragga does here! This is the dancehall hit that put da Benz on a collision course with big fame. |

Spragga’s first major hit, “Jack It Up” rocked the dancehalls in the early ‘90s and revved him up for a hit-packed career that continues to this day. His initial blow remains one of the best, a lewd and crude toast whose shouted “Ram it in / Jam it in” refrain over a tabla-sounding percussive break was raw enough to raise a few eyebrows among even dancehall vets. Actually a redone version of Sly Dunbar and Handell Tucker’s “Dickie” riddim, “Jack It Up” rides on the same sort of energy that was fueling ragga jungle tracks at the time, though the bass and drums never shift to double speed and the electricity comes as much from Spragga’s blatantly sexual chatting as from the track. He may be a shy guy off the mic, but you’d never know it from the Benz’s sweaty performance here.
