Meat Puppets I Quit Album: Golden Lies
Genres: Alternative
Rode hard and put away wet, the Meat Puppets return with an anthem of frustration that's slick enough for Wallflowers fans, but still twisted enough to appeal to longtime Puppet lovers! |

Just when you thought that "Let me see that thong-tha-thong-thong-thong" was going to be the most profound lyric that 2000 had to offer, along comes Curt Kirkwood with some cosmic musings that seem tailor-made for this maddening election year. "Don't believe in humanity," he sings, voice aching with resignation, "Think they got the best of me / I believe in carpentry / Gonna build a galaxy." But instead of boiling over with frustration, Kirkwood channels his angst into a beautifully tuneful, country-inflected pop song aimed at the drop-out in all of us. Throw in some glimmering guitar arpeggios, an all-too-short tremelo lead break, and some subtle bells on the chorus, and you've got a track that'll feel your existential pain even while it kicks your ass. Sure, the band's overall sound may be a little more sedate than the Meat Puppets of yore, but Kirkwood's uniquely warped vision still keeps the rest of the pop world at arm's length.
