“How many power generators we got in the house tonight?” asks vocalist/drummer Landis Expandis at the end of the track. Well, you can definitely count the 5 members of the All Mighty Senators among them. Whoo! Put on your highest platforms and your sparkly silver cape -- it’s time to blast off with the Baltimore superheroes. Recorded live for their 2000 release Raw Power Live, “Trendsetter” is a high-energy, funky romp that’ll challenge you to keep your ass in one place. Don’t even try -- that horn section will take you out! It all starts out with a funky riff from guitarist Warren Boes and quickly picks up when Landis Expandis takes the mic. Deciphering Landis’s lyrics is a bit of a challenge -- his rapid-fire sing-song rap delivery will have you reaching for the rewind button, but as with all great boogie music, it’s really more about the rhythm than the words. At several points Landis channels the spirit of Prince (or whatever his name is this week) by peppering the track with some sweet high-pitched vocal exclamations. “How you gonna do what needs to be done if you don’t know how to have some fun?!” asks Landis, obviously speaking as someone who must’ve majored in having fun. The real highlight of this song is the horn section -- two guys who manage to sound like ten. Download it, turn it up, and prepare to apologize to your downstairs neighbor, ‘cause you gon’ be getting’ yo’ boogie on fo’ sho’!
