Some of the slings and arrows aimed Chuck Mangione’s way a decade or two ago were justified, especially during his dire robo-fusion decline in the ‘80s. But those who wrote Mangione off completely might want to do a rethink, since his latest efforts show he’s recaptured the lighter-than-air groove of his peak period, without the saccharine aftertaste. “Annalise,” a pillow-soft composition for Mangione’s granddaughter, is no more jazz than anything by Kenny G or Najee; what makes the critical difference is that it’s authentically mellow, instead of being a market-tested simulation of same. The mostly acoustic instrumentation helps, as does Mangione’s effectively simple playing -- even when he reaches for the upper register, there’s none of the showboating of his younger days. It just makes sense, as does Mangione’s low-key but satisfying return.
