Brad Mehldau Los Angeles Album: Places
Genres: Jazz
Pianist Brad Mehldau’s ode to La-La Land is cool jazz that wears its egghead cred proudly. You’ll have to focus a bit to bring this one home. |

It might not remind you straight off of sunny L.A., but Brad Mehldau’s highbrow travelogue does owe something to the cerebral cool jazz that flourished on the West Coast in bebop’s wake. It also pays a sort of homage to jazz legend Bill Evans, in Mehldau’s attractive voicings and occasional cocktail runs, and to Keith Jarrett, in the use of space. Mehldau’s chops are up to those comparisons, and the backing of longtime bassist Larry Grenadier and drummer Jorge Rossy is sensitive and flawless. But all those skills and stylistic signifiers are put to the service of a fragile, wispy tune that has moments of beauty but is hard to get a handle on; it will require repeated listenings to make sense of the subtle melodic twists and dead ends. Worth the effort if you have the time, although some might just head for the masters named above instead.
