R. Kelly I Wish Album: TP-2.com
Genres: R&B
Mr. Kelly trades the bedroom for autobiography on this lightweight, cliché-ridden track. Hey R., bring back the songs about bonin’! |

R. Kelly gets slammed from time to time because he’s the horniest mainstream R&B star since Marvin Gaye and Prince, and people want to know why he doesn’t have more than coochie on his mind. Unfortunately, when he comes out of the bedroom and makes a stab at serious commentary, he’s simply not as effective, as the leadoff single from his new album proves well. “I Wish” meets all the minimum requirements for a “mature” song -- it’s a discussion of Kelly’s hardscrabble Chi-town days in general, and a dedication to his late mother in particular, and contains some affecting moments. But even drawing on his own biography, Kelly finds it hard to escape cliché. Instead, he substitutes the dramatic gesture and oversells it; the heavens open up midsong so his mother (we presume) can address him. And when he moves from reminiscing to complaining about the burdens of fame, it’s just too much for the pleasant, midtempo groove to support. Maybe we critics, who so often knock guys for not showing growth, should remember that sometimes, the old saying really is true: if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.
